Introduction
“I want to try making matcha at home, but it seems so difficult…” Have you ever felt this way?
While Japanese tea ceremony (Chado) has a long, formal tradition, enjoying a delicious, authentic cup of matcha at home is actually very simple once you know the basic steps.
In this guide, we will walk you through our “How to Make Matcha: The Basics” step-by-step, along with the tools you need. Why not whisk a fresh cup of matcha today and treat yourself to a quiet, relaxing moment?
What You Need to Prepare
Let’s start by gathering your tools. You don’t need to have everything right away—many of these can be replaced with items you already have in your kitchen.
MUST-HAVE ITEMS (The Essentials)
- Matcha Powder
- Tea Bowl (Chawan): A cafe au lait bowl or any small, deep bowl will work perfectly.
- Tea Whisk (Chasen): A traditional bamboo whisk used to foam the matcha.
- Tea Scoop (Chashaku): A bamboo scoop to measure your matcha. A regular teaspoon works too.
- Hot Water
BETTER-HAVE ITEMS (To Enhance Your Experience)
- Tea Strainer (Chakoshi): Crucial for removing clumps and ensuring a smooth texture.
- Tea Cloth (Chakin): Used to dry the tea bowl (kitchen paper is also fine).
- Waste Water Bowl (Kensui): Convenient for discarding water if you are away from the sink.
Step-by-Step Guide
Making matcha is divided into two parts: “Preparing the Bowl and Whisk” and “Preparing the Matcha.”
[Part A] Preparing to Make Tea: The Tea Bowl and Tea Whisk
Pre-warming your utensils is the secret to making a truly delicious cup of matcha.
- Warm and soften the whisk Pour about 60 ml of hot water into your tea bowl. Place your tea whisk inside and gently shake it back and forth for about 15 to 20 seconds. This softens the bamboo tines, making them flexible, less prone to breaking, and much easier to whisk with. Take a moment to enjoy the gentle, soothing aroma of the bamboo.
- Warm the bowl Remove the tea whisk. Gently tilt and swirl the tea bowl twice in a circular motion so the hot water warms the entire bowl.
- Discard the water Dump the hot water into your waste-water bowl (or sink).
- Dry the bowl thoroughly Wipe the bowl completely dry with a tea cloth or kitchen paper. If any moisture remains, the matcha powder will clump.
[Part B] Preparing Matcha
Now, let’s whisk your matcha!
- Measure the matcha Place your tea strainer over the bowl and take 2 scoops of matcha with your tea scoop (or 1 teaspoon).
- Sift the powder Sift the matcha through the strainer into the tea bowl. This simple step makes an incredible difference, ensuring a silky-smooth texture with no lumps.
- Break up the mounds Use the tip of your tea scoop to gently break up any mounds of matcha left in the bowl.
- Pour water and whisk Pour 60 to 70 ml of hot water (ideally around 80°C / 176°F) into the bowl. Whisk briskly back and forth using your wrist (not your whole arm) until a fine, creamy foam covers the surface. Gently draw a circle with the whisk at the end to smooth out the larger bubbles.
Closing Thoughts: May this cup of tea be the beginning of a peaceful time.
In the middle of a busy day, taking the time to boil water, sift green powder, and mindfully whisk a cup of tea becomes a beautiful, meditative ritual.
Let the rich aroma and vibrant green of WACHA matcha ground you and bring a sense of calm to your day.
